What Is NHR2 (TISRI)?

Portugal’s original Non-Habitual Resident (NHR) regime closed to new applicants in 2024.

It has now been replaced by a new framework commonly referred to as NHR2, officially known as TISRI (Tax Incentive for Scientific Research and Innovation).

While different in structure from the original NHR regime, NHR2 still provides significant tax advantages for qualifying individuals who become Portuguese tax residents.
NHR2 / TISRI Calculator
The calculator below provides an illustrative estimate of how certain income may be treated under Portugal’s NHR2 framework.
It is designed to help you:
• Understand potential exposure
• Compare scenarios
• Identify whether further planning may be beneficial
The results are guidance only and should not replace personalised advice.
If your estimated exposure is significant, proper structuring before or shortly after relocation can materially improve outcomes.

NOTE: Although the calculator has been designed primarily with UK expatriates in mind — particularly those relocating with UK pensions and investment assets — it can still be used more broadly as a general guide for anyone considering Portuguese tax residency.

This calculator provides illustrative estimates only and is for general guidance purposes. It does not constitute financial, tax, or investment advice. Tax outcomes under Portugal’s NHR2 / IFICI regime depend on individual circumstances, residency status, income structure, and legislative interpretation.
